Gulf Views Rest Home

Established in 1991, Gulf Views is a boutique 45-room rest home in Howick that boasts expansive views of the Hauraki Gulf, as well as a lovely garden and well-appointed facilities. With a family approach to care and community that was inspired by its founders and continues to be fostered by HBH Senior Living, Gulf Views is a highly desirable place to live.

Care philosophy

Established in 1991 by local resident, Scotch Macdonald, in memory of his wife Annette, Gulf Views retains a close-knit ‘family’ feel, combined with excellent and compassionate care that supports residents to remain independent, active and fulfilled.

The staff of registered nurses and qualified caregivers are all dedicated, caring people who have on-going training to meet the needs of all residents. Gulf Views offers both long term care and is managed by HBH Senior Living on a day-to-day basis. As occupancy allows Gulf Views also provides short-term respite care.

Living space

As its name suggests, Gulf Views boasts stunning, expansive views of the Hauraki Gulf, including Waiheke Island and Pine Harbour. It’s very close to Howick’s safe, gentle beach, the Domain and a children’s playground. Nearby Howick Village has plenty of cafés, restaurants, a supermarket and other specialty shops.

Gulf Views offers one large lounge for community gatherings and several small areas suitable for visiting friends or family. The conservatory area has tea-making facilities and is a popular spot at afternoon tea time.

Most rooms have shared ensuite bathrooms and for those that do not, toilets are in very close proximity. There is central heating throughout, with a thermostat gauge in every room. Residents are most welcome to bring their own future to reflect their personal tastes and individuality and help them feel more at home.

The majority of rooms in Gulf Views are standard rooms and do not attract a premium charge on top of the government fee. This makes it a very affordable option for older people.

Level of care

Gulf Views offers secure, compassionate and excellent rest home care. It’s small, friendly and personal, with only 45 residents’ rooms and friendly, long-serving staff, resulting in a close-knit community where everyone gets to know each other.

Community

Gulf Views is a close-knit community that offers a wide range of activities and outings. A Residents’ Committee is managed and chaired by the residents and meetings are held every two months. Our two Activities Co-ordinators work under the direction of the Occupational Therapist, offering a range of activities including: bingo, board games, quizzes, bowls, cards, care and craft, flower arranging, RSA visits and lunch outings (the RSA is close by so members can easily attend), and regular summer barbecues.

Wellbeing

Residents’ health and wellbeing is well catered for at Gulf Views with a hairdresser on site two to three days a week, our occupational therapist on site one day per month and as required, and a podiatrist, physiotherapist and doctor on call if needed. We also have a consultant dietitian who works with kitchen staff to ensure that specific dietary needs are catered for.

Our residents are welcome to have fish or a bird in their room to help our home feel like their home.

Industry endorsements

Gulf Views is managed by HBH Senior Living, a Howick-based senior living village with numerous industry endorsements for excellence of care. HBH is also one of only two fully registered Eden Alternative facilities in Auckland: you can read more about us here.

Additional care available

  • Home-cooked meals are prepared with the approval of a qualified dietician – and individual diets can be arranged for you as required.
  • The in-house receptionist can help with ordering newspapers and making appointments with the hairdresser, occupational therapist, podiatrist, physiotherapist and doctor.
  • A private telephone can be installed in rooms if desired.
  • A Chaplain is available for counselling and spiritual guidance.

Premium charges

HBH tries to be financially accessible. Our premium fees are some of the lowest in Auckland. A premium is a charge over and above the daily fee set by the Ministry of Health. The premium fee pays for services that fall outside of those contracted by the DHB. At HBH our premium charges are only for the size of and facilities available in the rooms in the care home.

  • A Premium Room: is larger, and has a private toilet.
  • A Standard Room (does not have a premium charge) is smaller and the toilet is shared between two rooms. The shower is shared.
  • Premium charges: minimum $10 per day and maximum $11.50 per day.
