Alison’s story – “giving back really aligns with my values”

Alison Hegely began volunteering with HBH back in November 1979 when it was still known as ‘Howick Baptist Home and Hospital’. Now a resident herself, her passion for volunteering continues to bring joy to other residents.

While Alison was working for HBH as a nurse, along with other Baptist churchgoers, she started to make bedspreads, curtains and jams for the residents at the time. She was also heavily involved in organising a gala event once a year with cake stalls and jam stalls, which was a great fundraiser for the Home and Hospital.

In 1991, Alison left nursing at HBH to pursue a career as a music teacher, and she dedicated her time to that for 20 years.

Alison leads a singing group on a Monday afternoon, Bingo on a Tuesday, and a ‘Knit & Knatter’ event on a Wednesday. Not only that, she often visits the rest home and plays musical favourites to the residents – and plays several hymns at devotions twice a month, which she has been doing for at least 35 to 40 years!

When asked about what volunteering means to her Alison said, “I’m a people person and love company and being around and helping where I can. As a Christian, volunteering and giving back really align with my values.”

For Alison, moving to HBH’s boutique retirement village was a given. “I knew when my time came, I would like to come back to HBH. I was so lucky when I approached Robyn that my lovely apartment was available,” she enthuses.

“My experience of working and volunteering with HBH Senior Living has given me utmost confidence in the management and the way things are done. My mum was also here for a while, so I know how great it is.”

“I love my apartment; it’s sunny and I have views down to the Howick Valley. On clear days, I can see Coromandel Peninsula, it’s just lovely. Feeling safe and secure is also important to me, especially after my husband died and I experienced living alone. I just love it here!”

Thank you Alison for your tremendous contribution to HBH. You really do help us bring joy, faith, music and companionship to everyday life!
