Dorothy’s story: “There’s a real sense of community here.”
After living nearby in Half Moon Bay for over 33 years, Dorothy moved to one of our independent apartments just six months ago. “Time catches up with you and before you know it you find yourself living alone in a big house with four bedrooms, a large garden and lots of maintenance,” she reflects.
Since moving in earlier this year, Dorothy has been reassured that she made the right decision. “Moving house is a very big change and entails many layers of organisation and decision-making – including selling your home, decluttering and settling into a new community,” she says. “It was stressful at times, but HBH were there every step of the way which was a great help.”
Dorothy knew a couple from her church who were working as caregivers at a nearby retirement home. They advised her that HBH was her “best bet”, because it’s not commercially run. “I respect them greatly, so their recommendation meant a lot,” she says. Now that she has settled into her apartment, Dorothy couldn’t be happier. “The staff are wonderful – they are so proficient at their jobs and great communicators. Nothing is too much trouble!”
As a spiritual person, Dorothy says she is “blown away” by the selection of books available at HBH. “From history to philosophical sciences and theology collections – it’s a secret gold mine!” she enthuses.
She reflects that one of best things about HBH is that it’s a charitable organisation. “HBH is a special place and there’s a real sense of community here,” says Dorothy. “I feel very grateful to be living in such a beautiful place that takes so much pride in the facilities which are spotless, the grounds which are beautiful, and in creating a kind, caring place for us to live.”
