James’ story: “HBH’s respite care works for Dad, and for us.”

HBH is the only aged care provider in the East Auckland community that offers advanced bookings for respite care, which means caregivers like James and Marie can plan a well-earned break.

“The staff are incredible – they remember Dad by name and welcome him back like a long-lost friend!”

James and his wife Marie have both his father and in-laws living with them. Caring for elders is an important part of Chinese culture, James explains, but they also know they need to take time out.

The couple enjoys traveling overseas once a year, during which time James’ father stays in respite care. They discovered HBH through James’ mother-in-law, who had previously volunteered there.

“HBH’s respite care, in particular the option to book in advance, works so well for us,” says James. “It means we can book in Dad’s respite care early.  I’m not sure how we’d book our travel plans confidently without having this in place,” he continues.

“Dad can be as involved as he likes”

James says HBH is an ideal fit for his father. “Dad is a bit of an introvert and likes time on his own,” he explains. “The staff respect this while also ensuring he feels welcome. They’re incredible – they remember Dad by name and welcome him back like a long-lost friend when he arrives.”

James says his father does struggle with the food after having spent a lifetime of eating Chinese food. “He finds the food a bit bland compared to our normal diet, but he manages, and the other benefits far outweigh this.”

“HBH works for us, and for Dad,” he says. “Dad is a creature of habit so knowing that HBH is a place he enjoys during our holiday break, means we can relax and take the break we need.”
